This explains what The Trip collects, why, and what you can do about it. We keep it short because we keep the data short.
What we collect
- Account details for commissioners: name, email, and a password (stored only as a one-way hash).
- Trip content that commissioners and group members add: dates, itineraries, lodging, scores, wagers and skins, photos, documents and stories.
- Golfer details the commissioner adds or a golfer enters when joining: name, and optionally email, phone number, handicap index and Venmo username.
- Partner program details if you apply: your website or social profile and a short description of your audience. Payout identity, bank and tax details are collected and held by Stripe, not by us. For anyone who clicks a partner's link, we store the partner's referral code in a cookie for 30 days so the partner can be credited for a purchase.
- Payment information is handled by Stripe. We receive confirmation of a purchase, not your card number.
- Basic usage data: a random, anonymous visitor ID in a cookie so we can count how many people view a trip page (for the commissioner's “visitors” number), plus standard server logs. It is not linked to your name or contact details.
- Cookies we set are the ones needed to keep you signed in, remember that you entered a trip passcode, remember which golfer you said you are, and the anonymous visitor ID above. We don't run advertising cookies.
How we use it
To run the Service: show trip pages to the people the commissioner shares them with, calculate scores, send the messages a trip is set up to send, take payment, prevent abuse, and answer support requests. We don't sell personal information.
Text messages
Phone numbers are used only to send updates for the trip they were added to (for example match results and dinner reminders) and to reply to STOP and HELP. Reply STOP at any time to opt out; message and data rates may apply. We do not share mobile phone numbers or text-messaging opt-in data with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Text messages are delivered through our messaging provider, Twilio, which handles them only to deliver them.
Who can see what
Live scores, matches and the leaderboard on a trip page are visible to anyone with the link. Other trip details (itinerary, lodging, photos, documents, stories) are visible only to people with the trip's passcode or join link, and to the commissioner and co-admins. The commissioner decides what to put on the page, so please don't add anything you wouldn't want your group to see.
Who we share data with
Only service providers that help us run the Service, under their own privacy commitments:
- Stripe, for payments;
- Twilio, for text messages;
- Railway, which hosts the app and its database;
- Google Fonts, which serves the typeface on our public homepage (it can see your IP address when the page loads).
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the Service and its users.
How long we keep it
We keep trip data for as long as the trip's plan is active and your account exists. When a trip is removed or an account is deleted, we delete the related data from the live system. Backup copies roll off on a rolling schedule of about 30 days.
Your choices
- Commissioners can edit or remove golfers, photos and other content at any time from the dashboard, and can download the player list.
- You can ask to see, correct or delete personal information we hold about you by emailing us.
- You can opt out of texts at any time by replying STOP.
Security
Traffic is encrypted in transit, passwords are hashed, and access to the admin side is restricted. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
Children
The Service is for adults and isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date above, and tell account holders about significant changes.
